Let Freedom Ring: A 4th of July Reflection on the True Meaning of Liberty

As fireworks light the sky and families gather to celebrate America’s independence, it’s easy to forget that not everyone in this country experiences freedom. On this patriotic holiday, we’re called to reflect on the deeper meaning of liberty, especially for those still trapped in modern slavery. Human trafficking, a hidden yet devastating crime, affects over 49 million people globally, many right here in the United States.

For survivors of trafficking, “freedom” isn’t about symbolic flags or songs—it’s about escaping violence, regaining control over one’s life, and being treated with dignity. Imagine being a young woman forced into sex work, or a migrant laborer who cannot leave their job due to threats or fraud. For them, freedom means choosing where to live, work, and sleep—fundamental rights that most Americans take for granted. That is why Scripture’s reminder in Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge,” is so relevant today.

This July 4th, our celebrations should be more than symbolic. They should move us to action. As followers of Christ, we’re reminded that true freedom is found in service: “You were called to freedom… use your freedom to serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13). If we’re not willing to use our liberty to help liberate others, then we’re missing the point of freedom altogether.

Let this Independence Day be more than a holiday—it can be a wake-up call. A call to become informed, to care deeply, and to take steps toward helping others experience the freedom we celebrate. Patriotic pride should inspire justice, not just joy.
